Leadership experts Des Dearlove and Stuart Crainer argue that the answer is authentic leaders - real people who are not afraid to reveal their weaknesses as well as their strengths.

Being an authentic leader means being true to yourself and your values - not presenting a false corporate image or trying to emulate the leadership style or characteristics of others. Paradoxically, what we can learn most from famous leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates and Richard Branson is how to be ourselves.

In this provocative presentation, Dearlove and Crainer debunk many of the traditional ideas about leadership and explain what it takes to lead with honesty, humility, and authenticity.

 
Session 2: The Narrative of Leadership

Closely linked with authentic leadership is the need for leaders to provide meaning for their followers. Meaning does not come from facts and figures alone. It requires a narrative - or story - that makes sense of what is happening around us.

Leaders have used story-telling to communicate important messages for as long as they have been able to speak. Human beings are hard-wired for narrative. Facts and figures provide content but can never replace context. Narrative provides the meaning.

In this session, Dearlove and Crainer explain why every leader needs a narrative to explain:
